Nicaragua’s National Forestry Institute has announced that through the cooperation of local government, citizen’s organisations, students and other social organisations, it has achieved the reforestation of over 65 thousand hectares of land. The reforestation mostly took place in the regions of Leon, Chinandega and Segovia, and consisted of the planting of a wide variety of native tree species.
Over 250 thousand people participated in the ‘National Reforestation Crusade’ which is aimed at combating the environmental degradation caused by the deforestation that took place under the neoliberal governments prior to 2006.
