May Day message from self-employed workers' union

NSCAG News | on: Tuesday, 2 May 2017

On 1st May, members of the self-employed workers' union CTCP celebrated the restoration of their rights by the Government. Luis Barbosa, General Secretary of the CST-JBE trade union confederation recognised that this has been largely due to dialogue and consensus which results from Nicaragua's tripartite system of negotiation between Government, unions and the private sector. In addition, Government policies have allowed members of the union to have access to technical and capacity building programmes and have contributed to a dignified working life. The main challenge to the union remains unemployment and another of the union's principal demands relates to the export processing zones, where the union is asking for the provison of child care facilities. Another challenge is the continued fight for gender equality in private companies.
