Jose Antonio Zepeda and Johnny Hodgson from the Nicaraguan teachers union ANDEN visited the UK from 10 – 19 April as guests of the NSCAG and the National Education Union (NEU).
Over the last few years, solidarity links between ANDEN and the NEU have been strengthened and have proved mutually rewarding. The most recent practical example of mutual solidarity between the two unions was a teacher exchange which took place in 2017. A video about the exchange can be found here:-

A very successful fringe meeting – Standing up to Trump in Latin America: the Right to Live in Peace – took place during the NEU Conference. In addition to the two visitors from ANDEN, contributions were made by Francisco Dominguez from the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign, and Julia Felmanas, Brazil Workers’ Party. The meeting was chaired by Christine Blower, NEU’s International Liaison Officer. The main theme of the meeting was the Trump administration’s intensification of sanctions against Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela – the ‘troika of tyranny’ – and how critical international solidarity is in this context.
Kevin Courtney, joint general secretary of the NEU, warmly welcomed Johnny and Jose Antonio to the conference.
